Climate Change: The Earth’s not in danger, we are!

Climate change talks

Did you know that NZ has a climate change minister? Her name is Paula Bennett. She represented NZ at the Paris Conference on Climate Change where a historic agreement was signed. NZ committed to lowering carbon emissions 30% from 2005 levels. This is a monumental shift in how NZ is seen by the world on climate issues – back in 2012, NZ was named ‘colossal fossil’ along with Canada and Japan for being one of the least constructive developed nations in the debate. It’s about time NZ changed its tune because climate change is *the* biggest issue of our time. Most people talk about it in terms of wanting to protect the environment and protect the earth itself. This is all well and good, but in fact, the earth will go on no matter what humans do to it. It will be in a much-altered condition, of course, but it will survive. Humans (and other life forms) are the ones who are at risk of extinction from climate change. In NZ, the changing climate will impact our agriculture hardest, as well as our infrastructure, health, and biosecurity. As an island nation, we need to be at the forefront of environmental protection if we want to survive!
